As you set up your social bookmarking accounts you may have a lot of questions as to what you need to do. We will see if we can help guide you through in general what you might expect.
- You will need to set up an account. We have tried to set up all our websites under the same account for each bookmarking site, for convenience, you may choose to do a separate account for each site. The choice is yours. However, some sites once you have entered your name can make it difficult to set up more than one account. Most sites are pretty good at giving you step by step instructions on how to use their service.
- This next step can be time consuming. Creating your profile varies from each site. You want this profile to be you, to do this here are 3 major steps to help. As you go through the profile type it out so that as you go through the social bookmarking sites you can just copy and paste. On Firefox there is profile plug in that you could use, as you get to each profile page you just use your ctl, alt, f keys to paste it into the profile. Check out your Firefox plug ins it is simple to use. Some other browsers have this as well.
- What is an Avatar; this was a new word to me. It is used as another word for your profile image. This is more than just a picture of you; it can be a product logo, or company logo, cartoon character. The experts tell us it should be uniquely you, something that catches people's attention.
- Usually there is a place to let people know about your website. Use this to your advantage, provide an interesting and eye catching description, usually you can create links that will draw people to your site. Some bookmarking sites will allow these links in the count towards quality one way links.
- Make sure you fill out all the information. Some of the questions the profile might ask are; what are your favourite things, example: TV shows, music, books and more. The experts say the more complete your profile, the stronger your account is and the more likely you will be to have some sway in the network.
- After you have completed all of this, spend some time cruising for great content, then bookmark it. The first place you can look for content is on the site itself, then if you know of content elsewhere look it up and bookmark it to the site.
- Social bookmarking sites will have some similar features and some variations, so as you go through the many sites take note. This, as you can see, can be time consuming, so set up a schedule to do a few a day and come up with a simple method to make it go as quickly and easy as you can. One of the more common sites you might find different is StumbleUpon. This site asks for you to put a toolbar on your browser and as you add content you vote giving it a thumbs up or down. We have found a few sites like this that to bookmark sites for each site you have to have a different toolbar in your browser or icon. Delicious is quite simple and allows you to bookmark from the site.
We suggest you begin with Delicious and Digg, use these sites to learn all you can about social bookmarking - try and Google to see which sites have the highest ranking and start from there. Good luck as you work your way thru this process. As you go thru the sites you may find it a good idea to decide on just a few sites that you will use on a regular basis.
